C-PTSD Therapy in NYC
Complex trauma doesn't always look like a single event you can point to. Sometimes it's years of walking on eggshells, performing okayness for everyone around you, or never quite feeling safe in your own body. If that resonates, you're not alone. And you're not broken.
At Cognitive Reset Counseling, we specialize in complex trauma therapy for adults who are ready to stop surviving and start living. We offer in-person sessions in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and virtual therapy across New York State.

What Is C-PTSD and Why Does It Feel So Different?
Complex PTSD develops in response to prolonged, repeated trauma. Not one moment, but many. Childhood neglect or abuse, years inside a high-control relationship, chronic emotional manipulation, or growing up in an environment where you never felt truly safe. Unlike single-incident PTSD, C-PTSD reshapes how you see yourself, how you relate to others, and how your nervous system responds to the world around you.
It can show up as emotional flashbacks that hit out of nowhere, an inner critic that never quiets down, people-pleasing that exhausts you, difficulty trusting others, or a persistent feeling that something is fundamentally wrong with you. None of that is a character flaw. It is your nervous system doing exactly what it was wired to do. It learned to protect you. Now it needs to learn that it is safe to rest.
RECOGNIZING COMPLEX TRAUMA
Complex Trauma Shows Up Differently for Everyone
Performers and artists often describe it as holding everything together onstage while quietly falling apart everywhere else. The hypervigilance that makes them attuned to every shift in a room becomes exhausting when the show is over.
Entrepreneurs frequently talk about building something successful while bracing for it to collapse. The drive and self-reliance that got them where they are started as survival strategies long before they ever started a business.
Adults with ADHD often carry trauma that has been compounded by years of misdiagnosis, feeling out of step, and working twice as hard just to keep up with a world that was not built for how their brain works.
What all of these experiences share is a nervous system that learned to stay on guard. The strategies that once kept you safe have started to cost you more than they protect you. That is what we work on together.
We offer in-person C-PTSD therapy in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and virtual sessions across New York State.

A Trauma-Informed, Integrative Approach to C-PTSD Treatment
Talk therapy alone is often not enough for complex trauma. C-PTSD lives in the body, in the nervous system, and in the parts of yourself that learned to stay small or stay guarded. That is why we use a brain-body-mind approach that goes beyond talking about what happened and into actually shifting how your system responds.
We draw from Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Therapy, Polyvagal Theory, and neuroscience-informed practices to help you regulate your nervous system, rebuild your relationship with yourself, and reconnect with your life. Every treatment plan is tailored to you. There is no one-size-fits-all path through complex trauma, and we don't pretend there is.

HOW WE WORK
What C-PTSD Therapy Looks Like at Cognitive Reset Counseling
We begin by helping your nervous system build a foundation of safety. That means learning to recognize your body's signals, understanding your patterns without shame, and developing tools that actually work when you're activated.
From there we move into deeper work. Internal Family Systems helps you connect with the internal parts of yourself that carry fear, shame, perfectionism, or self-doubt. Rather than pushing those parts away, IFS invites you to understand them and lead from a place of compassion. Somatic practices and Polyvagal Theory help you move out of survival mode and back into connection, creativity, and presence.
For established clients, Brainspotting may also be integrated into treatment. This brain-body-mind method works through eye position to access and process trauma stored beneath conscious awareness, particularly experiences that are difficult to reach through talk alone.
Healing from C-PTSD is not linear. Some sessions will feel like breakthroughs. Others will feel like maintenance. All of it counts.
What Becomes Possible After C-PTSD Therapy
Healing does not mean forgetting what happened or pretending it did not shape you. It means your past stops running the show.
Clients who do this work often describe feeling steadier in relationships, more present in their bodies, and less hijacked by triggers they could not previously explain. The inner critic gets quieter. The emotional flashbacks become less frequent and less consuming. There is more room to breathe, to create, to connect, and to trust.
Your nervous system has been doing its best to protect you for a long time. This is the work of offering it something new. Something safer. Something that finally fits who you are now, not who you had to be to survive.
